The Health Belief Model was
developed in the 1950s by a group of U.S. Public Health Service social
psychologists who wanted to explain why so few people were participating in
programs to prevent and detect disease (Health belief model, 2013). It is a
good predictor of how we deal with change. As nurses, first we must assess if
the patient is at a point in time where they can retain new information and
also want to learn new information. If the patient is physically sick and are
worried about treatment and the possible outcome, then they will not be at a
sound place mentally to learn anything. They also need to want if for
themselves. If someone else is forcing them to change their behaviors, it will
likely not stick in the long term. It takes a lot of motivation to change
formed habits and behaviors and the patient needs to be fully committed to the
process. The long term benefit will need to be very obvious so the patient will
have a goal to look forward to. As the nurse, it is important for us to get to
know the patient so we can adjust our teaching style to what works best for
them. Everyone is different so our teaching style cannot be one size fits all.
For immediate changes we need to find out specifics of their daily life so we
can help strategize ways to incorporate the new behaviors successfully. By
showing them they can fit the new behaviors into their current lifestyle with
just a few tweaks, it will show them it is possible. For long term changes I
think it is important to show flexibility. Not everyone is perfect and we all don’t
eat like we should or exercise as much as we should, so it is ok if we mess up
sometimes. We just need to get right back on track while remembering the bigger
picture of why we are doing it.
