If I was the nurse leaders implementing an outreach program, I would begin with
organizing data about the program. Understanding why the program is needed, how
it would benefit client, why it is beneficial to the hospital and how it should
be integrated will need to be well understood. To assist with gathering this
information I would outline a proposal and share it with employees and
administration for feedback. After the responses are considered, I would
revise my proposal and seek out a member of the leadership or administration
who has done this before for additional feedback, tips, and guidance.
Preparing to meet with potential stakeholders would mean researching and developing
marketing strategies. Next, I would set up a meeting with the stakeholders to present
the idea. I would develop a PowerPoint presentation and have handouts
available. I would not only test out the presentation and equipment prior to
the meeting but I would also have a backup plan available as well. “Technology
can be a great aide to communication, except when it does not work so having a
backup plan is essential” (GCU, 2013). I would deliver a brief presentation
that discussed the mission and key points of the proposal. “Making
presentations to groups or key individuals is a regular part of the leader’s
role and delivering a comprehensible message that is required to gain support
requires practice, review, and public speaking” (GCU, 2013). Other techniques
to prepare may include, practicing in the mirror to gain understanding of mannerisms
used that you may not be aware off. I would also practice presenting the
presentation multiple times focusing on clear, articulate and concise speech. I
would also try to prepare by considering possible questions from the
stakeholders.
Communication skills are an essential ability in the role of the nurse leader and nurse
manager. “Nursing managers and leaders must understand their role in the
importance of communication both within and outside of the organization” (GCU,
2013). For presentations I would try to be aware of my verbal and non-verbal
communication, and what message this is conveying to my audience. “Body
language might be the oldest language and it can be the determining factor of
whether leaders are successful” (GCU, 2013).
