Continuous quality improvement is the responsibility of all nurses to ensure we provide services that meet an appropriate standard of care. Our job is people so I feel in order to provide what’s necessary we always need to look to those people to see how can we improve our care. The goal should be for everyone within the organization to work together to achieve this goal, it is a continuous process that requires continuous reevaluation. No one wants to review lack of quality care given to our customers, however in our field unfortunately we meet satisfied and unsatisfied people all the time.

In the hospital setting where I have worked the majority of my career, we have done numerous quality care initiatives and continue to do so.We have committees where we look over such issues to determine where we could have provided better care. I am involved in a pediatric committee that the nurses started as a result of the fact that we admit pediatric patients on our med-surg floor, we have no designated pediatric unit. This has caused many nurses to feel apprehensive. Our committee began reviewing peds admissions and found there to be a lack of documentation regarding teaching. So as a result we now audit all pediatric patient admission charts to determine our success rate with teaching, we identified it as a problem and set out to fix the problem and address the challenges. We are now 99% compliant with all peds patients. This occurs with pain reasssessment, fall prevention, pretty much every aspect of care and prevention.

I have currently taken another position at the hospital where I plan to continue on with CQI in those areas. I want to listen to those that provide direct patient care, because “nurses are the heart of the system.” (Moran, M.J., Johnson, J.E. 1992). Those that work the floor know what is going wrong and what needs improvement. I will listen to their concerns, take them higher and advocate for the changes that improve practice. I was a floor nurse I know the importance of being heard and supported by management and that job satisfaction depends on it.
