Andrew Jackson Statue Discussion
Andrew Jackson Statue Discussion
Andrew Jackson was President of the United States from 1829 until 1837. My sense is that he is one of the most controversial presidents in American history. In this day and age in which we live, there was an attempt by Jackson protesters in June (2020) to remove a statue of him from Lafayette Park in Washington D.C. Lafayette Park is right across the street from the White House.
Watch the video presented by the link below and read about Andrew Jackson in your textbook (chapter 9) and anything else you want to read about him. I should point out that Jackson earned military fame prior to becoming president. He won the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815 (mentioned briefly in chapter 7) which was one of the reasons for his popularity that is mentioned in the video. Once you have read something on Jackson and watched the video, answer this question: should there be statues to Andrew Jackson in the United States today?
